There is value to be gained from studying design, and I want to add my own take on why studying design is an important complement to hands-on experience. This article presents an idea that has high influenced my way of thinking about design. The article is centered on ideation and focuses primarily on how to do it well.

It introduces the concept of design space, design exploration, and the trade off curve. Design Thinking is not a good strategy for all problems. For example, there are a large number of engineering problems that can be adequately solved using only engineering knowledge -- knowledge about humans is not needed. In such cases, problem definitions and requirements are assumed to be pre-validated, and seeking insights about the human is not needed. These kinds of problems don’t obviously benefit from Design Thinking. Those insights eventually result in revisions to the design.

Creative brainstorming is necessary for developing possible solutions, but many people don’t do it particularly well. And throughout the process it is critical to engage in modeling, analysis, prototyping, and testing, and to really learn from these many iterations. Understand the problem
Certainly not, if you haven’t extensively observed and spoken with real customers. There is a reason that design thinking is often referred to as human-centered design. Designers or evaluators rigorously test the complete product using the best solutions identified in the Prototype stage. This is the final stage of the five-stage model; however, in an iterative process such as design thinking, the results generated are often used to redefine one or more further problems. You can then proceed with further iterations and make alterations and refinements to rule out alternative solutions. The ultimate goal is to get as deep an understanding of the product and its users as possible. Throughout the Design Thinking process, teams often cycle back and forth between stages, iterating on ideas, gathering additional insights, and refining solutions based on feedback from users and stakeholders.
If we could understand a cell like we understand a paragraph, imagine what we could do. And so now not, only do we understand the meaning of each modality, we can understand how to translate between them. And so for obvious things, you could caption video to text; that’s captioning, text two images [mid journey], text-to-text, Chat GPT, amazing things. And so we now know that we understand meaning, and we can translate. The translation of something is generation of information.

So, what it means is that the way that we process information fundamentally will be different in the future. The way we write software will be fundamentally different in the future. The type of software we’ll be able to write in the future will be different, new applications. And then also the processing of those applications will be different. What was historically a retrieval-based model where information was prerecorded, if you will, almost. We wrote the text, prerecorded, and we retrieved it based on some recommender system algorithm.
We’ve outlined a direct and linear design thinking process here, in which one stage seemingly leads to the next with a logical conclusion at user testing. However, in practice, the process is carried out in a more flexible and non-linear fashion. Central to the design thinking process is prototyping and testing (more on that later) which allows designers to try, to fail, and to learn what works. Testing also involves customers, and that continued involvement provides essential user feedback on potential designs and use cases. If the MIT-Altitude team studying walkers had ended user involvement after its initial interviews, it would likely have ended up with a walker that didn’t work very well for customers.
